So you want to develop a new electronic product?

Good news! You don’t have to be an engineer. All you need is a great idea and a willingness to work with a team of experts that can turn your idea into a market-ready thing. But taking your product from concept to manufacturing is a journey. You’ll need help simplifying the design to save money, create a better product, and get it to market sooner.

When you come to MIS Electronics, we start by looking at what you already have. We take your collected data and ask our engineers to identify risks. Will it comply with regulations? Will it meet or exceed standards? We flag any issues that will slow things down, make things complicated, and drive up production costs (like certifications and molds). What are the long-term impacts of each decision? We identify features that will make the product better—faster. The pre-manufacturing stage makes your product better before it’s made real.

You might be technically savvy—you might even be an engineer—but you won’t also be an expert in electronics design, programming, 3D modeling, injection molding, and manufacturing. You can’t wear all the hats efficiently. That’s why you bring in experts to fill in the gaps of your expertise and lower upfront costs: development, engineering, prototyping, mold production, and manufacturing. Years of experience and technical knowledge expedites product development. A technical advisor oversees development and judges work quality, helping you make those key technical decisions.

Many entrepreneurs jump right to designing the schematic circuit diagram. But there are a number of preliminary items that should be sorted out first. This is where we look at profit margin, performance, prototype development, product feasibility, scale, and manufacturability. What components are needed? What will they cost? What is the lead time? How long will it take? Can you afford to develop this product? Can it be mass-manufactured cost-effectively? Can you sell it at a profit? These are the hard questions that must be answered to make sure your effort and expenditure will result in a manufacturable product that can turn a profit.

If the design stage gets a green light, it’s time to select the production components (microchips, sensors, displays, and connectors) based on retail price. This is where we build your Bill of Materials (BOM) and list out part numbers, quantities, and all component specifications. The BOM helps determine your Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) per manufacturing unit. But this per unit cost must also factor in the cost of PCB assembly, product testing, packaging, scrap rate, returns, logistics, duties, and warehousing. All costs calculated, you can figure out sales price based on product inventory to make successful sales goals.

Product feasibility met, it’s time to map the circuit schematic. The schematic is an electronics blueprint. The end goal of electronics design is to create a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) that holds the electronic components with the simplest (best) design possible. The smaller the product, the tighter the components, the longer it takes to draw the schematic. How will we route power? How will we handle high-speed signals and wireless circuits (Bluetooth, Wifi, GPS)? A power-intensive product, or one that has wireless connectivity, takes more time and thought to layout. We work to make sure that the prototype can be built without a heavy investment.

To move to the prototype stage we need to be confident that you’re happy with the design, and that the market will want to buy the end product. Is there a perceived market need for the device? All answers pointing to yes, the components are ordered from a reliable supplier and are soldered on the board to make a prototype.

The prototype reveals problems and confirms useability. This is where we flag flaws (testing and verification) and debug them, getting closer to the final iteration of the successful design.

That’s when we work on the casing for the board, pulling in industrial designers and 3D modeling experts to work on the look and feel. This is when your idea starts to take form and you can hold it in your hands and see how it functions. The plastic or metal shapes are made to give your product its character.

Drum roll, please….

When—and only when— the prototype meets expectations, we share it with our manufacturing team. They implement the production line run with a close eye on quality control and release the product.

Getting to this point required one brilliant idea, your expertise, our team of engineers, and a factory floor of state-of-the-art machines operated by expert technicians.
